Back to School: Gay Adolescence—September's Sideshow Recap
Posted by Sinclair Sexsmith
The September Sideshow: The Queer Literary Carnival was one of the best we've seen—I know, I say that every time, but each time is amazing in it's own way. This time, we had five readers talking about their experiences with school, growing up, and coming out again.
Loren Krywanczyk kicked off the night with a piece about transsexuals as teachers, and what it's like to teach middle school.
Tanya Paperny was up next with a piece about coming to a femme identity, and what it was like to buy a couple fancy dresses.
Rachel Simon's poetry had us laughing and nodding along.
Cheryl B. read next from her memoir in progress about leaving home, escaping New Jersey, and living on her own in New York City. I've heard what she read before, at her memoir show at Bluestockings last year, but the story is still poignant and interesting.
Theadora Fisher came down from Boston to read, and talked about what it was like to be gay (but not really out) in high school, and the beginning of the story of marrying her high school sweetheart. I love hearing her read her own work!
Last but not least, Melissa Febos read about Facebook stalking her first love. She was fantastic.
Thanks to Bluestockings Bookstore who provided us with books for the evening, and thanks to all the readers and folks who came out to listen!
Come on out for our next show, MASKS on October 12th. www.queerliterarycarnival.com

The Official Phoenix Tour

We've been busy here for a while, transforming the legendary Phoenix into more than just an East Village gay bar. We've added a state-of-the-art sound system and will be hosting queer live music every Thursday night starting this September. Photos and schedule to follow soon.
In the mean time, we'll be happy to take you on a photo tour through our new-and-improved space...starting outside...

In the mean time, we'll be happy to take you on a photo tour through our new-and-improved space...starting outside...
Then into the bar itself...
...and back toward the pool table where we set up our moveable stage for live bands...
...to the backyard smoking area that closes nightly at 10PM...(then you may smoke out in front)....
to our stylish sideroom where you can get away from the noise to talk one-on-one with your friends...
...and a general view from the back looking toward the front door...
...and waving our magic wand, let's make people appear...
...hope to see you soon...
